About The University of Texas System
For nearly 140 years, The University of Texas System has been committed to improving the lives of Texans and people all over the world through education, research and health care.
The University of Texas System is one of the largest public university systems in the United States. With 14 institutions and an enrollment of more than 256,000 students, UT institutions produce more than 66,000 graduates annually, including more than one-third of the state’s undergraduate degrees and more than 60 percent of the state’s medical degrees. Collectively, UT-owned and affiliated hospitals and clinics accounted for more than 10.6 million outpatient visits and more than 2.0 million hospital days in 2023. UT institutions also are among the most innovative in the world, collectively ranking No. 3 for most patents granted globally in 2022, and the UT System is No. 1 in Texas and No. 2 in the nation in federal research expenditures among public higher education systems. The UT System’s operating budget for FY 2024 is $29.1 billion, including $5.8 billion in sponsored programs funded by federal, state, local and private sources. With more than 116,000 faculty, health care professionals, researchers, support staff and student workers, the UT System is one of the largest employers in the state.
In addition, the UT System is home to three of the nation’s National Cancer Institute Cancer Centers – UT MD Anderson, UT Southwestern and UT Health Science Center-San Antonio – which must meet rigorous criteria for world-class programs in cancer research. Also, the U. T. System is the only system in the country to have four Clinical and Translational Science Awards from the National Institutes of Health.
